She earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology with honors from Spelman College in Atlanta before completing post-baccalaureate training at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. She earned her medical degree from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, then returned to Alabama for her Family Medicine residency at St. Vincent's East Hospital in Birmingham.
