AI Health Wearables and the New Garmin CIRQA


Garmin announced the CIRQA Smart Band on July 21, 2026. It is the company's first screenless fitness band, costs $199.99, and does not require a subscription for its core health and training features.[1]

That makes the Garmin CIRQA one of the clearest alternatives to WHOOP. The two bands look similar and both track sleep, recovery, heart rate, workouts, and daily activity without putting a screen on your wrist. The business models and software priorities are different.

The short version:

  • Choose Garmin CIRQA if you already use Garmin Connect, want training metrics without a required annual fee, or want a band that can feed heart rate to another Garmin device.

  • Choose WHOOP if you want its Recovery, Strain, Journal, and coaching system, value charging while wearing the device, or want the electrocardiogram features available with WHOOP Life.

  • Wait for independent testing if sensor accuracy is your deciding factor. CIRQA is new, and there is no device-specific independent validation or meaningful body of real-world testing yet.

What Garmin Put Into Its First Screenless Band

CIRQA takes many familiar Garmin watch features and moves them into a fabric band with one physical button and a small status light. Garmin says it can be worn on the wrist or upper arm and automatically learns to classify activities more accurately as the user confirms or edits them in Garmin Connect.[1]

Its health tracking includes:

  • Continuous wrist-based heart rate

  • Heart rate variability (HRV) status

  • Body Battery energy monitoring

  • Stress and respiration

  • Pulse oximetry, or estimated blood oxygen saturation

  • Skin temperature

  • Sleep stages, sleep score, sleep-duration guidance, and nap detection

  • Menstrual-cycle and pregnancy tracking

Its fitness tools include more than 80 activity profiles, daily steps and calories, estimated maximum oxygen uptake (VO2 max), Training Readiness, Training Status, workout benefit, and recovery time. Outdoor routes use the connected GPS in a compatible phone. CIRQA can also broadcast heart rate to a compatible Garmin device, such as an Edge cycling computer.[1][2]

The Garmin owner's manual lists up to 10 days of battery life, a 5 ATM water rating, and up to 90 minutes for a full charge with the included proprietary cable.[3] The manual does not describe an on-body charging mode.

The product's natural audience is broader than someone shopping for a first wearable. A runner can record workouts on a Garmin watch, wear CIRQA while sleeping or while wearing a mechanical watch, and keep the health record inside one Garmin Connect account. Garmin explicitly describes smooth transitions among its devices as part of the product's purpose.[1]

The Subscription Difference Is Real, With One Caveat

Garmin's $199.99 price is almost identical to one year of WHOOP One at $199. The economics separate after the first year.

This calculation assumes no price changes, replacement hardware, accessories, taxes, discounts, or trial offers. WHOOP includes hardware with the membership. The Garmin calculation assumes the original CIRQA lasts all three years.

Garmin's “no subscription required” claim applies to the core product. Garmin Connect+ remains an optional $69.99 annual plan. It adds features such as artificial intelligence insights, richer performance dashboards, expanded LiveTrack, nutrition logging, live activity statistics, and additional training guidance. The CIRQA manual also says that guided workouts and some activity functions can require Connect+.[2][4]

WHOOP places the device, app, analytics, and coaching inside the membership:

  • WHOOP One, $199 per year: WHOOP 5.0, Sleep, Strain, and Recovery scores, steps and activity tracking, VO2 max, heart-rate zones, Strength Trainer, personalized coaching, Journal, and behavior-impact analysis.

  • WHOOP Peak, $239 per year: Adds the Health Monitor, Stress Monitor, Healthspan, WHOOP Age, and Pace of Aging. It also includes the Wireless PowerPack.

  • WHOOP Life, $359 per year: Uses WHOOP MG and adds Blood Pressure Insights, on-demand electrocardiogram (ECG) readings, and irregular-heart-rhythm notifications.[5]

Garmin therefore wins the long-term price comparison for buyers who can live with its included software. WHOOP asks the buyer to decide whether its coaching and health layers are worth a continuing fee.

Recovery and Coaching: Similar Inputs, Different Language

Both platforms turn heart rate, HRV, sleep, and activity into a daily recommendation. The difference is how they organize the experience.

Garmin centers CIRQA around its wider training system. Body Battery estimates available energy from HRV, stress, sleep, and activity. Training Readiness helps frame whether the user is prepared for a hard session. Training Status, workout benefit, recovery time, and VO2 max connect the band to Garmin's running, cycling, and multisport history.[1]

WHOOP centers the app around three scores:

  • Recovery estimates readiness using HRV, resting heart rate, sleep, respiratory rate, and other inputs.

  • Strain summarizes cardiovascular and muscular load on a 0-to-21 scale.

  • Sleep compares completed sleep with estimated sleep need and tracks consistency, efficiency, stages, and sleep stress.

WHOOP then recommends a Strain Target and uses its Journal to connect behaviors such as alcohol, caffeine, late meals, or meditation with changes in recovery. Every membership includes personalized coaching. Peak adds stress and longer-term Healthspan tools.[5]

The practical choice is about the feedback loop you prefer. Garmin provides more of the language used across sports watches and bike computers. WHOOP has built its membership around daily recovery decisions and behavior experiments.

Battery, Charging, and Wearing It All Day

WHOOP has the battery advantage on the published specifications: 14+ days versus up to 10 days for CIRQA.[3][5]

Charging creates a larger daily-use difference. WHOOP Peak and Life include a Wireless PowerPack that slides over the sensor, so the user can keep wearing the band while it charges. WHOOP One includes a wired Basic Charger. WHOOP says a full charge takes roughly two hours and rates the 5.0 sensor IP68 for submersion up to 10 meters.[6]

CIRQA uses a wired proprietary connector and can take up to 90 minutes to charge. Its 5 ATM rating means Garmin says the device withstands pressure equivalent to a depth of 50 meters.[3] Water-resistance standards are tested differently, so the two depth numbers should not be treated as a simple head-to-head durability score.

Both support the wrist and upper arm, although bands and apparel may cost extra. WHOOP also supports multiple validated body locations through its AnyWear accessories and WHOOP Body clothing. Garmin sells wrist and arm configurations and asks users to set the wear location in the app.[1][6]

GPS and Workout Tracking

Neither device has built-in GPS. CIRQA connects to an iPhone or Android phone for route data. WHOOP also requires the user's phone for route, distance, and pace tracking.[1][7]

CIRQA has one side button that can start and stop a favorite activity. Other activities can be controlled from Garmin Connect, and the band can automatically detect and classify regular routines. Garmin lists more than 80 supported activities.[1][2]

WHOOP supports automatic activity detection and lets the user start sessions in its app. Strain accumulates across the whole day, including exercise and other periods of elevated cardiovascular load. Its Strength Trainer and muscular-strain tools give it a distinct workflow for resistance training.[5]

Runners and cyclists who want maps and live pace without carrying a phone still need a GPS watch, bike computer, or another device. CIRQA's advantage for an existing Garmin owner is account continuity and heart-rate broadcasting. WHOOP's advantage is the consistency of its Strain framework across recorded and unrecorded exertion.

WHOOP Has the Medical-Feature Advantage, at a Price

CIRQA's heart rate, Pulse Ox, skin temperature, stress, sleep, and recovery features are consumer wellness tools. Garmin's launch disclosure says Pulse Ox is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose or monitor a medical condition.[1]

WHOOP One and Peak are also mainly wellness and performance products. WHOOP Life is the exception for one specific function. Its WHOOP MG hardware supports an on-demand ECG and irregular-heart-rhythm notifications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration cleared WHOOP's over-the-counter ECG software in April 2025.[8]

That clearance is narrow. The feature screens for signs of atrial fibrillation and does not provide a complete cardiac evaluation. WHOOP says its Blood Pressure Insights feature is not a medical device, requires cuff calibration, and should not be used to diagnose or manage a condition.[5]

This distinction matters when comparing marketing language. The FDA's January 2026 general-wellness guidance separates tools intended to encourage a healthy lifestyle from functions intended to diagnose, treat, prevent, or monitor disease.[9] Most scores in both apps live on the wellness side of that line. Which Band Is More Accurate?

There is not enough evidence to name a winner between CIRQA and WHOOP 5.0.

CIRQA was announced today, so independent reviewers have not had time to test sustained heart-rate performance, sleep staging, workout detection, comfort, or battery life. Garmin's launch materials provide specifications and company claims, not an independent device-specific validation study.

WHOOP has more published research behind earlier generations. A 2025 laboratory study compared WHOOP 4.0, Garmin Vivosmart 4, and four other consumer wearables with polysomnography, the laboratory standard for sleep assessment. Every device detected more than 90% of sleep epochs, but wake detection was weaker and agreement for detailed sleep staging ranged from fair to moderate across the group. The authors said newer models still need performance validation.[10]

That study did not test CIRQA, WHOOP 5.0, or WHOOP MG. Results from an older sensor and algorithm should not be automatically transferred to new hardware.

For either band, use trends more cautiously than a diagnosis:

  • Compare resting heart rate, HRV, sleep duration, and training load with your own baseline.

  • Treat one unusual night as a reason to look for context, not proof of a health problem.

  • Confirm concerning oxygen, heart-rate, rhythm, or blood-pressure readings with an appropriate medical device and clinician.

  • Seek medical care based on symptoms and risk, even when a wearable score looks normal.

What Your Doctor Can Actually Use

A physician can usually work with a concise trend more easily than a screen full of daily scores. Bring 30 to 90 days of resting heart rate, sleep duration, exercise load, and the dates of medication, illness, travel, or behavior changes.

WHOOP Peak and Life members can generate a shareable Health Report covering 30- and 180-day trends. Garmin Connect can export activity and wellness data, although the process often produces comma-separated value (CSV) or Flexible and Interoperable Data Transfer (FIT) files that may require more work to summarize.[11][12]

Before buying either band for health monitoring, ask your doctor:

  1. Which two or three metrics would be useful for my condition or goal?

  2. What change from my baseline should prompt a message or appointment?

  3. Do you prefer a PDF, screenshots, or a short written summary?

  4. Which readings must be confirmed with clinical equipment?

Who Should Buy Garmin CIRQA?

Garmin CIRQA is the better fit when:

  • You already own a Garmin watch, Edge computer, or other Garmin device.

  • You want to keep Garmin training history while wearing a mechanical watch or charging a larger sports watch.

  • A required annual fitness subscription is a dealbreaker.

  • Training Readiness, Body Battery, Training Status, and recovery time match how you plan workouts.

  • You want to broadcast heart rate to compatible Garmin equipment.

  • You can accept connected GPS and wired charging.

The main reason to wait is evidence. A launch-day feature list cannot establish optical heart-rate accuracy during movement, reliable sleep staging, comfort over several weeks, or real battery performance.

Who Should Buy WHOOP?

WHOOP is the better fit when:

  • Recovery, Strain, and Sleep are the daily framework you want.

  • You will use the Journal and behavior-impact analysis consistently.

  • On-body charging and a 14+ day battery matter more than avoiding a membership.

  • You want Healthspan and Stress Monitor features in WHOOP Peak.

  • You want the FDA-cleared ECG function in WHOOP Life and meet its eligibility requirements.

  • You prefer a shareable health report and WHOOP's broader coaching layer.

The main reason to decline WHOOP is recurring cost. At current prices, even WHOOP One costs nearly three times as much as CIRQA over three years.

The Verdict

Garmin CIRQA makes screenless tracking much easier to buy without a long-term commitment. At $199.99, its included feature set is substantial: 24/7 health tracking, detailed sleep, Body Battery, Training Readiness, recovery time, VO2 max, more than 80 activities, and connected GPS. Existing Garmin users have the strongest reason to choose it.

WHOOP remains the more complete choice for someone who specifically wants the WHOOP method of Recovery, Strain, Sleep, Journal, and personalized coaching. Peak and Life add health layers that CIRQA does not match, while the Wireless PowerPack provides a cleaner route to uninterrupted wear.

The decision comes down to software and cost more than appearance. Garmin sells a device that can be used with free core software. WHOOP sells an ongoing service that includes a device. Buyers who care most about accuracy should wait for CIRQA-specific independent testing before making a final call.
