Dr. Matthew Ray Hitchcock grew up in Dunlap, TN and attended The McCallie School in Chattanooga before earning his undergraduate degree at Clemson University. He earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis. His family medicine residency took place at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton near San Diego, where he later served as a faculty physician and as the hospital's Chief Medical Informatics Officer.
After residency, Dr. Hitchcock received a commission as an active-duty officer in the United States Navy. He deployed twice on humanitarian missions to the South Pacific. The Navy awarded him the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for extraordinary service during those deployments. He also holds an MBA. He is board-certified in family medicine. Outside medicine, he and his wife Kathleen raise four children together.
