His interest in social sciences and philosophy led him to pursue doctoral work in medical sociology. He earned his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Tennessee in Memphis in 1993. He then completed his internship and residency in Family Medicine at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center in South Carolina, finishing in 1996.
