Dr. Martin C. Schulman grew up in Long Beach, California and has called Encinitas home since 1988. He earned his M.D. from UC San Diego in 1985. He completed the Long Beach Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program in 1988 and holds board certification from the American Board of Family Medicine since that year.

He spent fifteen years as a faculty clinician with the UC San Diego Medical Group. During that time he served as medical director of the La Jolla Family Medicine office for twelve years and as clinical service chief for the Division of Family Medicine for three years. He also trained residents and third-year medical students as an attending physician and small group preceptor. The UC San Diego Academy of Clinician Scholars selected him as an inaugural member. He continues as a voluntary clinical professor of family medicine and works part-time with the UC San Diego PACE Program. He maintains affiliate medical staff privileges at UC San Diego hospitals in Hillcrest and La Jolla and at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas. In October 2005 he opened Encinitas Personal Healthcare to deliver continuous, accessible primary care on his own terms. He is passionate about preventive medicine, laser therapy for pain, and consumer-directed healthcare. He follows published clinical guidelines and prefers generic medications when appropriate. He and his wife Tarra have been married since 1984. They have two married daughters, one son, two granddaughters, and two dogs named Ziggy and Stevie.
