He went on to receive his MD from Universidad Central del Caribe School of Medicine in Puerto Rico in 1990. He completed his Family Practice Residency at the University of Florida Health Science Center in Jacksonville, Florida in 1994.

After residency, Dr. Fernandez spent two years in private practice in Orlando, Florida. He then served as Clinical Director at the Mescalero Indian Hospital in New Mexico, working with the Indian Health Service from 1997 to 1999. He moved to North Carolina in 1999 and joined New Hope Family Practice in 2011, where he built lasting relationships with many patients he still sees today. His clinical interests span diabetes, hypertension, sports medicine, adolescent health, and Hispanic health. Outside the office, Dr. Fernandez is married to Dr. Connie Brooks-Fernandez and has two adult daughters. He enjoys water activities, time with family, attending church, and international mission work. He volunteers regularly with Village Christian Academy on their senior mission trips.
