Dr. Edward Dieguez Jr. is an anesthesiologist and interventional pain specialist who has practiced medicine in Saint Augustine since 1988. He earned his medical degree from the European University of Santiago de Compostela School of Medicine in Spain, a university founded in 1495. His maternal grandfather graduated from the same institution in 1906. After graduation, Dr. Dieguez served as an unpaid surgical intern under Professor Jose Luis Puente Dominguez, a member of the Royal Academy of Medicine and Surgery of Spain. He then completed a surgical residency at a Johns Hopkins-affiliated program in Baltimore, Maryland, followed by an anesthesiology residency at the University of Miami. Earlier in his career, he chaired the Department of Anesthesia at Flagler Hospital and pioneered post-surgical epidural pain control for major cases including aortic aneurysm repair and Whipple procedures. He organized the first musculoskeletal and spine clinic in Saint Johns County before launching his private practice dedicated exclusively to Interventional Orthobiologics. Born in Cuba, Dr. Dieguez arrived in the United States as a child in 1964 and lived in Europe for eight years before completing his medical training. He and his wife Tessy Goyenechea MD have been married 51 years and have two daughters. His first Prolotherapy patient was his own daughter, treated for a soccer ankle injury.
