About

At Direct Doctors, seven physicians deliver direct primary care across two Rhode Island locations. Co-founders Lauren Hedde DO, James Hedde DO, and Mark Turshen MD launched the practice in August 2014. All three trained in family medicine at Brown. The practice has grown steadily since and now serves 1,800-plus Rhode Island patients.

Every physician at Direct Doctors holds a medical degree. The practice employs no nurse practitioners or physician assistants. Members pay a flat monthly fee of $119 with no copays. The practice does not bill insurance for primary care visits. Patients keep their insurance for labs, medications, specialists, and emergencies. Appointments run 60 minutes, same-day access is available, and doctors give patients their cell numbers for texts, calls, and emails. The practice also offers house calls at no added charge. Dr. Erin Kunkel leads a dedicated women's health program covering menopause, gynecology, and obesity medicine. Dr. Ashley Lakin runs Flora Family Health in Riverside, focusing on prenatal care and lactation medicine. Dr. Sara Delaporta and Dr. Laura Henseler round out the team with expertise in addiction medicine, reproductive health, and full-spectrum family medicine.
