About

Woodson C. Merrell, MD earned his undergraduate degree cum laude from Amherst College in 1971 and his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1976. He completed his residency in Primary Care Internal Medicine at Roosevelt Hospital, now Mt. Sinai West, finishing in 1979. Early in his career he pursued clinical fellowships in Tropical Medicine at the University of Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania and in Traditional Chinese Medicine at the Academies of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Beijing and Shanghai. He currently holds academic appointments as Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Icahn Mt. Sinai School of Medicine and as Associate Attending Physician at Mt. Sinai West Medical Center.

From 1998 to 2015, Dr. Merrell served as Founding Executive Director of the Beth Israel Center for Health and Healing, the nation's largest academic clinical center for Integrative Medicine, where 24 practitioners logged 70,000 patient visits per year. He holds a NY State Physician Acupuncture Certificate and has integrated acupuncture into his clinical work for 30 years. He chairs the annual Integrative Healthcare Symposium in New York City and helped found the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine, which grew from 5 to 80 member medical schools.
