A. in Sociology from West Liberty State College in 1978 before serving with the WV State Police, where he received multiple commendations for criminal investigation work. He then pursued medicine at WV School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg, graduating in 1987. He served as student government president during the 1984-1985 school year.
