Peter Shalit, MD, earned his undergraduate degree at Cornell University before moving to Seattle to pursue graduate study. He completed his PhD in Genetics at the University of Washington in 1981. Recognizing in his mid-twenties that medicine was his calling, he enrolled at the University of Washington Medical School and graduated in 1985. He then completed his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Washington in 1989.
Dr. Shalit holds board certification from both the American College of Physicians and the American Academy of HIV Medicine. His engagement with HIV care began in the early 1980s, while he was still in medical school. He has witnessed HIV evolve from a life-threatening illness into a manageable chronic condition and considers that transformation a defining part of his career. He serves as Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine, where he trains health professional students in HIV care and the health care of sexual and gender minorities. He opened his Seattle practice in 1990 and moved to its current First Hill location in 2015. He lives on Capitol Hill with his husband and three cats.
