About
Dr. Michael Havekost grew up the youngest of three boys in Fremont, Nebraska. His path to medicine began at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he initially studied computer science. A book called "Operation Prayer" changed his direction. Reading through its prayer requests for other countries, he noticed a recurring need for medical doctors. He switched his major to chemistry and set his sights on medical school.
He married his college sweetheart, Sandy, before they moved to Omaha to attend the University of Nebraska College of Medicine together. He then completed his Family Medicine residency at St. Joseph Family Practice in Wichita, Kansas, earning the role of chief resident in his third year. He earned his Board Certification in Family Medicine in 1991 and settled his family in Beatrice, where he and Sandy raised five children: Allison, Betsy, Caleb, Danielle, and Elijah. 5 years at the Gage County Medical Clinic, then moved to the emergency department in 2008. During his hospital years, he helped develop a palliative care program, worked as a hospitalist, and built a nursing home comprehensive care program. After five years researching the Direct Primary Care model, he launched Havekost Personal Healthcare to practice medicine the way he believes it should be, like a doctor who is a friend of the family, offering affordable, value-driven care.
