He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1977, then returned to complete a Master of Education in Psychology in 1980. He earned his Doctorate of Medicine from Texas Tech University Health Science Center School of Medicine in 1985. He then completed both his internship and residency in Family Practice at Montgomery County Medical Education Foundation, Medical Center Hospital in Conroe, Texas, finishing in 1988.
