Dr. Lawrence Afrin graduated summa cum laude and as class valedictorian with a BS in Computer Science from Clemson University in 1984. He completed medical school, an internal medicine residency, and both clinical and research fellowships at the Medical University of South Carolina between 1984 and 1995. He then joined the MUSC Hematology/Oncology faculty, where he served for nearly two decades. During that time, he directed the hematology/oncology fellowship training program from 1997 to 2010 and led the Hollings Cancer Center's Myeloproliferative Neoplasms Clinical Trials Program from 2008 to 2014. His early interest in computer science also shaped a parallel career in medical informatics at MUSC.
In 2014, Dr. Afrin joined the University of Minnesota's Hematology/Oncology faculty to deepen his clinical and research work in mast cell disease.
