She went on to the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine, where she served as senior class president, then completed her Family Medicine residency at the same institution, earning the distinction of Chief Resident.

She practiced medicine on the Navajo Indian Reservation in New Mexico, at a birthing center in rural Haiti, and as a locum tenens physician in New Zealand.
