About

Jeffrey R. Unger, MD, ABFP, FACE is a double board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Diabetology with 37 years of primary care experience. He holds fellowship status with the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (FACE) and the American Board of Family Practice. A third-generation physician, Dr. Unger has built his career around diagnosing and managing the most complex chronic conditions a primary care doctor can encounter. His clinical passions include type 1 and type 2 diabetes, addiction and substance abuse disorders, migraine, chronic pain, bipolar disorder, Cushing's disease, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, obesity, and metabolic disease. He has lived with type 1 diabetes himself since 1986 and has worn an insulin pump for over 30 years. That personal experience deepens his approach to diabetes care in a way few physicians can match.

Dr. Unger serves as Director of Metabolic Studies at Catalina Research Institute in Chino, California, and as Medical Director for Akasha Recovery Center in San Diego. He also serves as Regional Director for Mission Hospice. He co-authored the AACE 2021 guidelines for technology use in diabetes management and led the Lira Prime Global clinical trial evaluating liraglutide in primary care settings. He has participated in over 150 clinical trials and published more than 190 peer-reviewed articles. He authored three medical textbooks on diabetes and one on migraine headaches. He lectures internationally on diabetes and migraine more than 100 times each year and serves as an associate editor for Diabetes Care, Clinical Diabetes, and the Journal of Family Practice. Dr. Unger earned the Family Physician of the Year award for the Inland Empire in 2018 and the American Diabetes Association named him Father of the Year in 2009. He teaches family medicine to UC Riverside medical students and serves as team physician for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. His family is woven into the practice: wife Lisa manages operations and membership, and daughter Sarah has worked with the practice for 14 years.
