J. D. grew up in Gainesville, Texas, the son of a primary care physician who practiced there for 55 years. That upbringing gave Dr. Cole a clear picture of what medicine could look like at its best. He began his undergraduate studies at Texas A&M University, then earned his Bachelor of Arts degree Cum Laude from the University of North Texas in 1980. He went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston in 1984. He completed his family practice residency at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth in 1987, the same year he earned board certification from the American Board of Family Practice. In 2000, the ABFP named him a Fellow.
Dr. Cole has practiced privately in Fort Worth since 1987. He holds active staff membership at Harris Southwest Hospital and Baylor All Saints, where he has served on numerous committees. He is a past president of the Tarrant County Academy of Family Physicians and belongs to the Tarrant County Medical Society, the Texas Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the Texas Medical Association. He treats type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, lipid disorders, allergies, and asthma, among other conditions. A sixth-generation Texan, he is married with three children and two grandchildren. Outside the office, he works on his family ranch in Gainesville, hunts, fishes, and travels to Prague, where his grandchildren live.
