Dr. David Hemphill earned his MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1995. A United States Air Force scholarship made that education possible. He then completed an internship in internal medicine at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York before serving five years as a USAF Flight Surgeon. He moved to Albuquerque in 2001 and completed his internal medicine residency at the University of New Mexico in 2004. He went on to finish a geriatric medicine fellowship, also at UNM, in 2009. He holds board certification in both internal medicine and geriatric medicine.
Before opening his solo practice, Dr. Hemphill built broad clinical experience across several care settings. He served as a geriatrics faculty member at the UNM Senior Health Clinic. He worked as a hospitalist within the Lovelace Hospital System and spent time as a hospice medical director. He also cared for patients in skilled nursing facilities as a post-acute and transitional care physician. That range of experience shaped his expertise in the complexities of internal medicine, particularly for older adults. Before medicine, he studied music at Southern Nazarene University, a background that reflects the range of curiosity he brings to his work.
