About
Joseph Andrew "Andy" Berkowski, MD grew up in the Detroit area and graduated as co-valedictorian from the University of Detroit Jesuit High School. That education instilled in him a lifelong commitment to cura personalis, the Jesuit principle of care for the whole individual. He volunteered extensively at Children's Hospital of Michigan during high school and spent three summers as a research assistant in the Evans Biochemistry Lab at Wayne State University.
Dr. Berkowski earned his undergraduate degree in religious studies at Stanford University, where a dormitory talk by Dr. William Dement first drew his attention to sleep medicine. He completed medical school at Wayne State University School of Medicine, an internship at Henry Ford Hospital, and a neurology residency at Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University. During residency, he conducted sleep physiology research at the Detroit VA on heart rate variability in sleep apnea patients with spinal cord injuries. He then returned to Stanford for his Sleep Medicine fellowship, training under Dr. William Dement and Dr. Christian Guilleminault, and rotating through the RLS subspecialty clinic supervised by world-renowned RLS expert Mark Buchfuhrer, MD. Dr. Berkowski holds board certification in Sleep Medicine and brings dual expertise in neurology and sleep. He serves as Vice Chair of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine Task Force that co-authored the 2025 Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Treatment of RLS and PLMD. He has treated several hundred patients with dopamine agonist augmentation and has published more than eight peer-reviewed articles in journals including JCSM, SLEEP, and Sleep Medicine Clinics. He has produced over 75 educational videos for patients and clinicians and has appeared in the Washington Post, Medscape, Well+Good, and other publications. He has also traveled to Capitol Hill on behalf of the RLS Foundation to advocate for patients.
